After School Classes

Leonardo's Basement offers classes for children ages 6-16 throughout the year, including:

After School Classes    Saturday Open Shop    Creativity Convention    Lego League

After School    During the school year we offer 6-week-long sessions of after school classes. The classes meet on Mondays (3:30 - 5:00 p.m.), Wednesdays (4:00 - 5:30 p.m.) and Fridays (2:00 to 4:00 p.m.).

Each week students choose from several different project-building activities in separate areas of the shop. They can sample as many as they like or work in one area the whole day. Participants can build a different project each week or work on things that take many days to complete. The ever-changing choices include: arts and crafts, sewing and fiber arts, woodworking and metal working, Lego robotics and build-what-you-want, rockets and propulsion, sculpture, geometric structures and much more.

Minneapolis Public School students might be able to ride a regular school bus to our shop. In order to ride the bus you must contact your school to identify a bus route that has a stop near 43rd & Nicollet. Complete a Student Transportation Request form for the school and tell us what bus your child will ride and the location of the bus stop.

Saturday Open Shop    Just as the name implies, Saturday classes provide an opportunity for girls and boys ages 6-16 to build projects that spring from their own fertile imaginations. Instructors are available to help as much or as little as needed. Participants have access to all of the tools and materials in the shop.

Four-week sessions are held throughout the year. Classes meet from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Creativity Convention (school release days)    While teachers are at their annual convention in October, girls and boys ages 6-16 can attend their their very own Creativity Convention at Leonardo's Basement. Participants attend three of our typical hands-on building classes each day - invention, woodworking, textiles, arts and crafts, etc. You can attend both days or just one day.

The class offerings and dates for the Creativity Convention change every year. Make sure you are on our mailing list.

Lego League    Each fall Leonardo's Basement sponsors teams of girls and boys in grades 4-12 who compete in the Minnesota Lego League, a competition to design, build and program autonomous robots. The robots compete specific tasks on a 4' x 8' playing field. In addition to engineering and programming, team members complete a research project and make presentations before panels of judges.

Teams are formed in early September. The number of teams that Leonardo's Basement is able to sponsor depends upon the availability of volunteer adult coaches. If you are interested in helping coach a team, or want more information about the team selection process, please contact us at 612-824-4394 or info@leonardosbasement.org                        top
